Mr. F. L. Silva states:

I am a clerk employed in the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company.

At about 5 minutes past eight o'clock on the evening of June 12th 1922 I was on board the Star Ferry Launch going from Kowloon to Hongkong. The boat left the Kowloon wharf at 8 p.m. I was on the upper deck, and when about in mid-stream I heard a splash, and a shout from the lower deck. The boat slowed down and blew here whistle.

I heard the Chinese shout out an overboard." I ran to the side of the launch but could see nothing as it was dark. I divested myself of my coat and shoes and then I saw an object floating on the water away astern. I at once jumped overboard and swam to the object which I found to be a Chinese female. I got one hand underneath her and swam, keeping her afloat, until I found a life-buoy which had been thrown overboard from the ferry launch. On this I placed the woman and hung on myself until the Ferry Boat steamed back and we were both taken on board. The woman did not lose consciousness. After the ferry boat arrived at the Hongkong side I went to the club Lusitano where I got a change of clothing from a friend and proceeded to my work in the Telegraph "ffice. While I was in the water, and while being taken on board the ferry boat again, the current was so strong that it carried the boat away out of her course and she collided with a steamer but no damage was done.

I am,

Your obedient servant,

(3d). F. L. Silva.
